The fire protection design of industrial buildings in Germany is carried out based on the "Muster-Industriebaurichtlinie" (MIndBauRL). Due to its introduction as a technical building regulation in the respective federal states, it is binding for the client as a recognized rule of technology. In contrast to the descriptive requirements of the "Musterbauordnung" (MBO), the application of performance based calculation methods opens up the potential of a risk-oriented evaluation of the building. However, since the procedures in Section 4 MIndBauRL must cover all the buildings within the scope of the directive, a corresponding design of the building structure can still be extremely conservative. The alternative verification using fire protection engineering methods to meet the minimum requirements for fire protection in industrial buildings therefore is a sensible supplement to the approved methods. Using the example of a chemical-technical production plant, the basic features of the verification procedure from the definition of a suitable fire scenario to the modelling of a design fire and the structural analysis in case of fire are demonstrated.
