Venous thromboembolism in pregnancy presents a considerable diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for primary care physicians. Not only do the physiologic and anatomic changes of pregnancy complicate interpretation of diagnostic tests, but radiologic studies and anticoagulant therapy pose health risks. This article highlights risk factors associated with venous thromboembolism in pregnancy, difficulties in diagnosis, and risks and benefits of anticoagulant therapy.
