Ileo-anal pouch - Is the risk worthwhile for the patient? Part 1: Negative postoperative events and function

The aim was to determine whether the risk of pouch construction is compensated by a better postoperative quality of life. All negative postoperative events, function and quality of life were registered. 52% had an ideal course, 44% had one or more negative events, in 4% the aim of the operation was not achieved. 30% developed a pouchitis resp. anastomotic stenosis. Mean stool frequency decreased postoperatively from 12 to 5/day. 45% reported that continence was deteriorated, 30% used pads. Anal resting pressure decreased from 91 to 66 mmHg. Family life, recreational activities and general well-being improved after colectomy. Sexual life improved only after closure of the ileostomy. The pouch procedure has a high risk which is not compensated by a better function.
