Shear and compressional wave velocities and attenuation in Ti-0.49-Ni-0.51 shape memory alloy were accurately measured for rhombohedral phase transformation by the pulse transmission method using a dual acoustic path over the temperature range between 0 degrees C and 90 degrees C. The temperature dependence of the compressional;md shear wave velocities showed a minimum over the temperature range between 0 degrees C and 40 degrees C. Various attenuation peaks of compressional and shear waves appeared. These peaks correspond to the temperatures near the characteristic temperatures of the transformation. From measured ultrasonic data, the elastic and inelastic properties of Ti-0.49-Ni-0.51 shape memory alloy are discussed.
