THE PLACE OF SYNTAX IN THE SEMANTIC PRODUCTIVE GAME: A THEORETICAL EXPERIMENTATION FROM BENVENISTE'S LINGUISTICS

In this article, we explore the consequences arising from taking Benveniste's position, according to which significance is only possible due to the inalienable relationship between syntax and meaning, which produces visibility to the language play set based on the articulation between language syntagmatization and semantization For that, we produced a reinterpretation of Benveniste's theorization from the perspective of the History of Linguistic Ideas established by the theoretical-methodological practice of Discourse Analysis, in order to restore in Benveniste's theoretical architecture the decisive place of syntax for understanding the functioning of language within production of meaning. It is from the analysis of the syntax plan that Benveniste unfolds the dual functioning of the language: the semiotic functioning and the semantic functioning. The results of this analytical interpretation allowed us to understand that the semiological point of view that determines Benveniste's theorization about language is marked methodologically by an entry in the understanding of the use of language - by a given regulation - through syntax. It was also from these results that we were able to analyze the play set between syntax and meaning, determining significance - meanings and drifts of meaning - in the statement "Cidadao, nao. Engenheiro, civil, formado. Melhor do que voce".
