This communication reports that, merely by tilting the patch through appropriate angle in a monopole microstrip antenna the bandwidth of operation could be enormously enhanced with inclusion of a rectangular notch in the partial ground plane. The proposed antenna is simple, compact, low cost, and easy to fabricate having overall volume of 25 x 25 x 1.5 mm(3). It is printed on commercially available low cost FR4 substrate with epsilon(r)= 4.3 and 0.025 loss tangent. The operating bandwidth of the proposed antenna ranges from 3.9 to 26.7 GHz, which corresponds to 149% impedance bandwidth (|S-11|<10 dB) whereas the Peak gain is 6.59 dB and peak radiation efficiency is 87% in the operating band. The F-H/F-L ratio of the tilted patch antenna is 6.9. Measured and simulated results are in good agreement. The antenna finds application in 5.2/5.8 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) bands, 3.5/5.5 GHz WiMAX bands, X band (8-12 GHz), satellite communication, etc. (c) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
