A study has been made of the design and performance of a Ti diffused LiNbO3 optical modulator employing a superconducting coplanar waveguide as a transmission line of a traveling signal. By computer simulation it is shown that the superconducting transmission line can realize much wider bandwidths and smaller modulation powers compared with those with the normal metals. Threshold voltages are also shown to be less than 100mV without the significant degradation of the modulator performance. Operation of the traveling-wave type optical modulator with a superconducting electrode has been demonstrated at frequencies up to 26.5 GHz.
