This Letter studies the generalized synchronization of two coupled spatiotemporal chaotic systems and reveals the determinate relation between the synchronization error and parameter differences. Based on it, a new method is provided to calculate the precise values of an unknown chaotic attractor's parameters. The influence of noise is also discussed. And a spatiotemporal chaotic communication system is broken down as an application. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
