A comprehensive study on the nature and effects of anionic trash at various process locations was undertaken at Millar Western Pulp in Whitecourt, AB. The anionic trash consisted of both lignin and anionic material. Unbleached pulp exhibited the highest levels of trash in the production line. The soluble portion of the trash in sewered filtrates had little effect on cationic polymer consumption at the sludge press while that associated with the pulp was not detrimental to the peroxide bleaching process.
