Internet SCSI (iSCSI) is the latest standard poised to enable the emerging storage-area-network (SAN) market. Internet SCSI is not replacement for SCSI but rather a means of encapsulating or tunneling SCSI packets over Ethernet networks by appending a header that describes how to extract SCSI control data from a TCP/IP packet. Leaverging the Ethernet infrastructure is the foundation of the iSCSI proposition. The argument is that Ethernent will enable iSCSI to drive a lower cost than Fiber Channel by leveraging the hundreds of millions of Ethernet ports shipped through all segments of the network market.
