Elazar Benyoetz was born in 1937 in Austria and lives in Jerusalem. After starting out as a Hebrew writer, he changed to German in the late 1960s, since when he has been writing German literature in Jerusalem in the tradition of the ancient Hebrew or rabbinical literature - an unusual case of cultural hybridity. In his aphorisms he follows the tradition of Spruchdichtung, in his notes he follows the Midrashim. At the same time, his literature contributes to a cross-cultural debate on wisdom.
