摘要
This brief reply is an attempt at disaggregating the Turkish-Armenian conflict into various dimensions and concentrating on the axis of tension between history versus memory, and ethics versus politics. As for the first theme, it contends that the historical study of the Armenian genocide is beset by a campaign of delegitimation, most notably due to the 'war of memory' between Armenian- and Turkish-nationalist identity politics. Rather than providing answers, it asks three major questions: 1) Can Turkey join the European community without morally purifying its national memory?; 2) Why is the Armenian genocide not an ethical point of reference and as such not represented as prominently as the Holocaust?; and 3) Does remembrance of mass violence lead to prevention of mass violence?
