Perspectives of low Level Ethanol and Biodiesel/Diesel Fuel Blends on Diesel Engine Emission Reduction

摘要
The paper describes the results of the investigation the aim of which was to find out the impact of low level blends of ethanol and diesel fuel/biodiesel on emission reduction in laboratory conditions on an engine test bench. The experimental work was done with an XD2P diesel engine in the Biofuels laboratory of Latvia University of Agriculture. The emission tests were carried out using diesel fuel (DE0), biodiesel (BE0) and ethanol as an additive to biodiesel with concentration of 5% (BE5) and 10% (BE10), and ethanol additive to fossil diesel with concentration of 5% (DE5) and 10% (DE10). The results in load operation showed that increase in ethanol concentration in the biodiesel-ethanol blend reduce CO, CO2, HC and NOx emissions better than in diesel-ethanol blends. Some exceptions were observed only in idling.
