摘要
A new process has been developed to form hollow aluminum alloy spheres directly from the melt. These spheres are hermetic and have a relatively constant wall thickness and diameter. Spheres are formed through a pair of coaxial nozzles. The inner jet sustains a flow of inert gas while the annulus formed between the inner and outer jets carries a stream of molten metal. Axisymmetric instabilities in the hollow liquid metal jet result in pinched off bubbles that solidify as they fall through a flow controlled, inert atmosphere. Pure aluminum, eutectic aluminum-silicon, and aluminum-2% calcium were investigated as sphere producing materials. Al-2%Ca showed the most promise, due at least in part to the presence of oxide particles. Oxide particles promoted sphere stability and increased solidification rates.
