Landslide generated impulse waves. Influence of initial slide shape and deformability

Mass failures occuring on wate reserviors margins and on coastal slopes may generate large water waves. This study investigates the influence of landslide shape and deformability on the subsequent generated waves and run-up. The approach is based on a 2D Navier-strokes VOF numerical flume. The paper is focused on impulse waves generated by landslides with critical impact Froude number. The slide is modeled by a Newtonian fluid. Results indicate that initial slide shape has little influence on final wave characteristics. in the propagation zone, but can significantly modify run-up extent. Slide deformability seems to be a critical parameter. Waves and run-up are highly dependent on slide deformability.
