An experimental and modelling study of laser fabricated samples

摘要
Solid samples about 20mm long, 20mm in breadth and about 2mm thick of Ti-6Al-4V have been produced from powder using direct laser fabrication, The temperature histories of individual layers have been measured by inserting thermocouples during laser fabrication. The changes in microstructure along the height of the laser fabricated samples have been characterized using optical, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy, together with X-ray diffraction. A 3D-transient finite element model using ABAQUS has been developed which predicts thermal history during laser fabrication with reasonable accuracy. The thermal histories of different parts of the sample have been used to interpret the influence of the processing variables on the microstructures.
