Roger Bate (see Monitor No. 41) claimed that organic food production is a Euro-centric preoccupation and could devastate the economies and environments of developing countries. However, Carlos Basilio argues that producing organic food is a viable way of survival - and often the only way - for many resource-poor farmers in developing countries.
