Luminescence in 2-dimensional WS2 nanosheets

Thin nanosheets of 2-dimensional WS2 were prepared using highly energetic probe-sonication method. In bulk form WS2 possesses an indirect band gap and photoluminescence emission is very feeble to detect. Contrary to this an intense photoluminescence emission from WS2 nanosheets has been observed. The structural analysis together with Raman spectroscopic analysis suggests that the obtained nanosheets possess layered and highly crystalline structure. The present study suggests that by controlling the dimensions of the semiconducting nanostructures their bandgap and hence emission properties can be optimized for various light sensitive applications.
