Regulatory attention is focusing on ammonia emissions as a precursor to particulate ammonium nitrate. We made estimates of N excretion and subsequent volatilization from a beef feedlot. Estimated daily excretion of N from fattening cattle (>340 kg body weight) is 180 g/d (March) and 182 g/d (July). Estimated excretion of N from lighter cattle (<340 kg body weight) is 85 g/d (March) and 83 g/d (July). Estimates of excretion varied with animal daily weight gain. With a feedlot population of 15,147 (March) and 30,455 (July), the estimated N excretion is 2.23 Mg/d (March) and 4.78 Mg/d (July). If N volatilization is 55%, estimated emissions would be 1.26 Mg/d (March) and 2.63 Mg/d (July). These estimates will be useful to interpret results from field sampling at the feedlot.
