Liquid-liquid equilibria for the ternary systems water + benzonitrile + acetonitrile and water + benzonitrile + propionitrile were studied in the temperature range (25 to 45)degrees C. Composition analyses of each phase were carried out by gas chromatography. Phase diagrams, including tie lines and, for the system containing acetonitrile, plait points are reported. Distribution curves are shown and enthalpies of transfer of acetonitrile and propionitrile from benzonitrile to water were calculated. Mutual solubilities for the binary system water + propionitrile were measured in the temperature range (25 to 80)degrees C.
