Effect of preparation methods on thermoelectric properties of p-type Bi2Te3-based materials

p-type Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric materials were fabricated by various methods, such as zone-melting, mechanical alloying, spark plasma sintering (SPS) and hot-pressing. Electrical conductivity (sigma), Seebeck coefficient (alpha), and thermal conductivity (kappa) were measured in the temperature range of 300-500 K. The influence of the preparation methods on thermoelectric properties was studied. Compared with that of the zone-melted ingot, the figure of merit ZT (ZT = alpha(2) sigma T/kappa) of those materials fabricated by the other methods mentioned were all increased to some extent. The obtained maximum ZT value was about 1.15 for that fabricated by the combination of zone-melting and spark plasma sintering technique.
