The High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) is a 30MW (thermal) helium gas-cooled reactor with a core composed of prismatic graphite blocks piled on core bottom structure. The core bottom structure of the HTTR consists of an arrangement of graphite components. Core seismic design is one of the major concerns in the safety evaluation of the HTTR. Thus, a comprehensive research and development program was undertaken at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute to develop a means to analyze the block-type gas-cooled reactor core for seismic design. Based on the program, the vibration characteristics of the HTTR core and core bottom structures were clarified quantitatively, and the structural integrity of the graphite components of the HTTR was confirmed.
