Hilbert spectrum analysis of induction motors for the detection of incipient broken rotor bars

Induction motors are the most widespread motors in industry, constituting more than 85% of all industry motors. Broken rotor bars are one of the most common faults in squirrel cage motors. Several techniques have been developed for broken bar detection using Motor Current Signature Analysis. In this paper the use of Hilbert Spectrum for incipient broken bar detection is proposed. The analysis of the Hilbert Spectrum allows the detection of early faults. Several tests using a motor with different levels of damage and one broken bar were developed. The levels of damage in the broken bars were of 3 mm, 5 mm and 7 mm. Experimental and statistical results show high accuracy in the detection of incipient broken bars. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
