摘要
S-Nitrosothiols (SNOs) is a family of nitric oxide (NO)-derivedmolecules resulting from NO binding to sulphhydryl (-SH) groups present in specific cysteine residues of peptides and proteins. This redox modification is reversible and is regarded as a cellular mechanism to extend the physiological function of NO. SNOs are classified as having either low or high molecular mass, with S-nitrosoglutathione and proteins being the most commonly studied, respectively. This article provides an overview of the importance of SNOs, especially in stress situations where NO content appears to be unaffected or even downregulated, with SNOs being responsible for the generation of nitrooxidative stress under these stress conditions.
