Effect of SiC particle size on hot deformation behavior of SiCp/AA2024-composites

The hot deformation behavior of SiCp/AA2024 composites reinforced with different sizes of SiCp reinforcements (1, 8, 15, 36, and 44 mu m) was studied by hot torsion tests. For the composites reinforced with SiCp of 8, 15, 36, and 44 mu m sizes, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was responsible for the hot restoration during the hot deformation at 320 - 480 degrees C. Also, for the composite reinforced with SiCp of 1 mu m size, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was responsible for the hot restoration at 320 - 430 degrees C, and dynamic recovery (DRV) was responsible for the hot restoration at 480 degrees C. The composite reinforced with SiCp of 8 mu m showed the highest flow stress (265 MPa) at 320 degrees C and the highest failure strain (3.65) at 480 degrees C under a strain rate of 1.0/sec.
