This paper first presents an overview of digital library developments based on the author's experiences at the Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies in the University of Tsukuba. It then describes some metadata-centric research activities, which include a subject gateway for library oriented resources on the Web published by and for libraries, a multilingual subject gateway designed for public library users, a metadata schema registry developed using Web-oriented technologies in collaboration with the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, and a conceptual model for metadata schema interoperability. Lastly, the paper describes some lessons learned from these activities and discusses some issues for future work.
