Gaseous Spiral Arms in Centaurus A: SMA and ALMA Views

We report on the molecular gas properties in the gaseous and dusty disk of the closest giant elliptical, NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), using high resolution (CO)-C-12 (2-1) observations of the central 3' (3 kpc) obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) as well as the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the Science Verification program. Comparison of SMA and ALMA maps show very good agreement. The maps reveal the existence of spiral arms and provide evidence that this kind of features may develop within elliptical hosts. In the case of Centaurus A the spiral arms extend from the circumnuclear gas at a radius of 200 pc to at least 1 kiloparsec, and are found to be trailing.
