End-group structures of water-quenched living cationic polystyrene and poly(p-methoxystyrene)

摘要
Water-quenching reactions of the living cationic polystyrene and poly(p-methoxystyrene) generated by the 1-phenylethyl chloride/SnCl4/nBu(4)NCl system and the HCl/ZnCl2/nBu(4)NCl system, respectively, were carried out in CH2Cl2 at -15 degrees C. H-1 NMR and elemental analyses of the resulting polystyrene and poly(p-methoxystyrene) showed quantitative attachment of the chloride terminals that were essentially identical to the propagating end, indicating the high stability of the styryl-type living growing species against water.
