BEHAVIOR OF HELICAL ELECTRON BEAMS IN GYROTRONS WITH HIGH PITCH FACTORS

We analyzed the process of stabilization of electron beam parameters in a gyrotron having a high value of the "cold" pitch factor (i.e., that found with no account for the field of the beam's space charge), namely, g(0) >= 2. Time dependences of the current entering the work space and of the space charge and potential at different cross sections of the beam, as well as electron velocity distributions in the work space, which correspond to various values of g(0), are found. It is shown that for g(0) increasing to values, at which intense oscillations of the potential and space charge develop in the beam due to reflections of some electrons from the magnetic trap, it turned out to be impossible to increase the working pitch factor further.
