Abutilon theophrasti (velvetleaf) germinates in Czech Republic later than other weeds of wide row crops (such as Chenopodium album, Polygonum lapathifolium or Mercurialis annua) and this species also has slower development in early growth stages. That is the reason why A. theophrasti can act as a harmful weed only in sugar beet stands free of other weed species. Velvetleaf reacts sensitively on intraspecific competition. On stands with density of 200 and more plants per square meter have velvetleaf plants much lower individual biomass than on those with 20 - 30 plants per square meter. Velvetleaf shows high tolerance to common herbicides used in sugar beet stands (desmedipham, phenmedipham, ethofumesate. etc.). In our experiments, the highest efficiency against velvetleaf was obtained by triflusulfuron.
