Sediment and nutrient losses were measured from a subsurface drainage-runoff-erosion experiment for the years 1988 to 1996. The experiment, located near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, consisted of five surface-drained plots, three of which were also subsurface drained. Subsurface drainage reduced surface runoff by 32%, soil loss by 48%, nitrogen loss by 39%, phosphorus loss by 35%, and potassium loss by 36%.
