Hypersensitivity reactions to paracetamol in child: a review based on one clinical case

Allergic-like reactions to paracetamol (acetaminophen) are rare. Paracetamol allergic and non-allergic hypersensitivity has been diagnosed in a few patients with skin and/or respiratory symptoms, immediate and accelerated urticaria and angioedema especially. Most patients with hypersensitivity to paracetamol reacted also to anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e. acetyl-salicylic acid), suggesting that their reactions resulted from a non-allergic hypersensitivity. However, anaphylactic reactions, and potentially harmful toxidermias (i.e. acute generalised exanthematic pustulosis) have been related to specific paracetamol allergic hypersensitivity, with tolerance to anti-inflammatory drugs.
