The virtual laboratory as an active learning environment

摘要
The critical success factor in an effective e-learning strategy is the use of an active learning environment instead of the simple "page-turning" content. The aim of this paper is to present the virtual chemistry laboratory, a power tool of active e-learning, and a new approach for creating active learning environments. The virtual chemistry laboratory includes a great number of experiments, which are accomplished through the use of real-time 3D graphics and pre-rendered animation. Interactive laboratory activities are able to enhance a student's understanding of chemical processes and practical skills. In order to make human-computer interaction more enjoyable and productive, an animated pedagogical agent was added to the interface of the laboratory. The cost-effective approach based on the application of a presentation engine - NATURA - with scripting language for the development of virtual learning environment is described.
