Leiomyosarcoma originated from the Glisson's capsule of liver in a Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus)

This report describes a leiomyosarcoma originated from the Glisson's capsule in a 6 year old female budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). The bird exhibited a decrease of the general health status (depression, anorexia, weight loss, feather roughness) and a tumour mass located on the visceral surface of the liver and protruded out of the organ was evidenced at necropsy. Histologically, interlacing bundles of spindle cells with eosinophil fibrillary cytoplasm and elongated / hyperchromatic nuclei constituted the tumour. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were strongly immunoreactive to a smooth muscle actin and weakly to vimentin. According to these results, the case was classified as a leiomyosarcoma.
