Syntheses, crystal structures and electrochemical properties of Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes constructed from ferrocene-based carboxylate and N-containing ligands

By the reactions of Zn(OAC)(2)center dot 2H(2)O or Cd(OAC)(2)center dot 2H(2)O with o-ferrocecarbonyl benzoic acid and 1,10-phenantholine in methanol solution, complexes [Zn(o-OOCC(6)H(4)COFc)2 (phen) (H2O)] center dot CH3OH (1) and {[Cd (eta(2)-o-OOCC(6)H(4)COFc)(mu(2)-o-OOCC(6)H(4)COFc)(phen)] center dot CH3OH2 center dot H2O}(2) (2) were prepared. Their structures were confirmed by elemental analysis, IR data and X-ray diffraction single crystal structure analyses. In complex 1, the mononuclear [Zn(o-OOCC(6)H(4)COFc)(2)(phen)(H2O)] units are connected by weak hydrogen bonds forming one-dimensional chain. In complex 2, the o-FcCOC(6)H(4)COO(-) units as bridging ligands connect two Cd(II) ions forming the dinuclear cores. The solution-state differential pulse voltammetries of the two complexes were determined. The results indicate that the half-wave potential of the ferrocenyl moieties is influenced by the Zn(II) or Cd(II) ions in 1 or 2. CCDC: 645320, 1; 645321, 2.
