Gordon Craig's reviews (Edward Gordon Craig, The 'Page, the Mask and the Marionnette')

Independently from the official theatre, Edward Gordon Craig was always in quest of a place that would be true to his ideas and would keep them, a real research space which would guarantee autonomous experiences. Failing to have a theatre at his disposal, he devoted himself to writing and publishing three periodicals : The Page, The Mask and The Marionnette. Very early he understood that the creation and circulation of his drawings would be far more influential than his stage productions given to a limited audience. Taking a great diversity of directions, from dreams of gigantic architectural spaces to marionnette plays, the review seemed an ideal medium to confront reality while refusing all compromises, and became the substitute of too ambitious a project. It also offered him opportunities that he had never dreamt of to use infinite pseudonyms in his identity quest.
