Mobility of swine red blood cells has been obtained by measuring the erythrocyte sedimentation rate in saline solutions, together with hyper- and hypo-tonic conditions. Results in infinite dilution are compared with theoretical mobilities for oblate ellipsoid versus the axial ratio determined from the non-sphericity index by using Coulter Counter at different osmotic pressures. Although experimental data locate approximately around the theoretical mobility for oblate ellipsoids with random orientation, they seem to scatter somewhat lower than the above theory. It may reflect the slow sedimentation due to flickering of erythrocytes with deformability. Erythrocyte mobility has the maximum value near physiological osmolality. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
