摘要：

The Article is devoted to the historiographical aspects of V. T. Pashuto's book on foreign policy of Ancient Rus'. The historiographical context of V. T. Pashuto's monograph allowed to show its innovative character. However, the influence and trends of Soviet historiography determined poorer elaboration of foreign policy of Old Russian scattered principalities in the 12th - 13th centuries in V. T. Pashuto's book. Some contradictions and problems in the study of this period are shown by means of the example of Vladimir-Suzdal Principality. The local method proposed by S. I. Arkhangelsky and tested by him in his study of Oliver Cromwell's foreign policy is proposed as a way to overcome this historiographical gap.
