The purpose of this review is to examine the effects of atypical antipsychotics on body weight and prolactine secretion. Weight gain is an important side effect of antipsychotic treatment. Obesity is often associated with diabetes, lipid abnormalities and hypertension. The propensity to induce weight gain is different among the atypical antipsychotics. The early identification and management of these endocrine effects are essential. Hyperprolactinemia is a common adverse effect of some atypical antipsychotics, can be associated with clinical symptoms and therefore merits special attention.
