Study on hydration process of cement clinker minerals prepared by sol-gel method with ESEM-FEG

The hydration process of four main cement clinker minerals prepared by sol-gel method has been studied with an environmental scanning electron microscope with field emission gun (ESEM-FEG). Results show typical morphologies at different hydration times. The process of hydration reaction Of C3S and C2S can be divided into five time periods. The C-S-H phases formed by C3S hydration develop from gels to fibers and fibers continue to grow longer with the hydration time. The length of C-S-H fiber is 1.6 mu m after 28 days hydration time of C3S. Portlandite crystals grow from flake to mu m-level and interlocking structure. The hydration process of C2S is similar to but slower than that Of C3S. The length of C-S-H fibers is about 550nm after 28 days hydration time. And there are some gm-level portlandite crystals. Cubic crystals occur very early during the hydration process of C(3)A and C(4)AF. After 2 minutes hydration time Of CA there are already some cubic and foil-like calcium aluminate hydrates. More cubic crystals occur after the hydration time of 12 hours. There are already many cubic crystals after 2 minutes hydration time of C4AF.
