摘要
Silicon nitride ceramics exhibit a series of interesting properties such as low density, high thermal shock resistance, high rupture resistance and good wear behaviour. These properties can be exploited at room to high temperature (less than 1000degreesC) for cutting tools, engine parts or bearing applications. Up to date, the different process steps for the fabrication of silicon nitride parts are well known. However, the obtaining of precise dimensions and shapes often needs grinding operation as final step. This paper is devoted to study the influence of grinding parameters (depth of cut per pass, rate of workpiece) on the silicon nitride material surface damages and flexural strength. The experimental results have shown that the mechanical properties remain unchanged and the surface damage decreases for "hard" grinding conditions.
