The mechanism of afterglow in cerium doped silicate glasses is discussed. The afterglow occurs when the charge carriers created by the excitation process trapped in and recombined radiatively around the trapping centers. The afterglow is suppressed by cerium which is present in trivalent state in the silica glass. The ultraviolet radiation and X ray analysis are carried out to study the afterglow mechanism.
