Hyperon and charm production in Pb-Pb collisions at CERN SPS

We will review the experimental situation on hyperon and charm production from the CERN SPS lead-ion programme. After recalling the physics motivation the two main experimental results are discussed: the strangeness enhancement observed already with lighter ions, and the more than order of magnitude enhancement in the production of Omega hyperons; then the stepwise suppression in J/psi production, and the increase in intermediate-mass dimuon yield. The latter can be explained by enhanced open charm production in heavy-ion collisions.
