Behaviour of lucerne populations (Medicago sativa L.) in a hyperarid zone of southern Algeria

摘要
We studied a set of morphological characteristics displayed by lucerne, focusing on traits that were reflective of plant behaviour. Our research was conducted on 3 local populations occurring in different areas of southwestern Algeria (the Adrar region). We observed very strong correlations among characteristics, notably among the number of pods per plant (NGPL), the number of seeds per plant (NgPL), and the number of flowers per plant (FPL). These findings indicate that variation exists among populations, especially for flower and pod traits. The El Menea population displayed precocity, which should be of interest to farmers who want to use lucerne as forage.
