Angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission investigation of the electronic structure of ferromagnetic MnPt3

The electronic structure of the intermetallic compound MnPt3 has been studied by angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy on (001) and (111) surfaces of molecular-beam epitaxy-grown epitaxial films. The momentum dependence of the energy of the valence band has been determined for the Gamma-X-M and Gamma-R-M planes assuming free-electron-like final states. For different manganese to platinum concentrations, a simple relationship between the density-of-states at the Fermi energy and the magnetization of the films can be found, which is discussed in terms of existing band-structure calculations. The surface structures are investigated by reflecting high-energy electron diffraction and Auger electron spectroscopy.
