Calcium, vitamin D, and nutrition in elderly adults

Adequate nutrition plays a major role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, particularly in elderly individuals. This article focuses on the nutrients of greatest importance, calcium and vitamin D. The dietary requirements for most other nutrients involved in bone health, and overall health, can be met by following the food pyramid guidelines, including a diet with at least five servings per day of fruits and vegetables. Specific nutritional considerations for frail elderly persons are also discussed.
