Hadronic endcap calorimetry at ATLAS and results from the first prototype.

The physics constraints on the design of the calorimeter are briefly discussed. A description of the mechanical design and the readout system for the ATLAS Liquid Argon Hadronic End-cap Calorimeters (HEC) is presented. Finally, preliminary results from tests of the first prototypes of the HEC are reported.
