The paper describes the periodic safety reviews of fire safety carried out on the advanced gas-cooled reactors operated by British Energy Generation. A deterministic approach to the assessment of nuclear safety was adopted for the majority of the reviews; the safety principle and assessment guidelines for this are presented and their application described. Other aspects included within the scope of the reviews were the interaction between fire and other hazards, the use of combustible materials at the power stations sites and five safety management. Review outcomes are described.
