摘要
The existing status of indoor-related formaldehyde research was reviewed. The review was based on a literature search carried out using the 'Web of Science' (ISI). It was revealed that formaldehyde is produced on a large scale by the oxidation of methane or methanol in the presence of a catalyst. It was a colorless gas at room temperature that was flammable and highly reactive. Formaldehyde itself was produced in small amounts from methanol through the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), which was a human metabolite and was measured in urine. The review also revealed that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had classified formaldehyde as carcinogenic for humans in 2004. This evaluation was based on information regarding the relationship between nasopharyngeal cancer and leukemia related to the exposure to formaldehyde.
