摘要
This paper is a reassessment of a salient feature of Middle Kentish spelling which has caused much scholarly controversy. The argument presented here has considerable implications for the analysis of spelling-systems from the Middle English period, and raises important general questions to do with the relation of the written and spoken modes of language.
